#8 Prince and the Revolution - Purple Rain

I think Prince was one of those musicians who had a big affect on the music scene far beyong his own albums. There are so many spin offs from his band like Sheena Easton, Chaka Khan and Carmen Electra. Beyond that he is widely considered to be the guitar viruoso of his generation.

I remember seeing him along with a bunch of guitar greats playing an extended version of Hotel California in which he simply dominated the stage. This is the album that really cemented him in the popular culture and turned him into a superstar.

"When Doves Cry" and "Let's Go Crazy" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, while "Purple Rain" checked in at number two and "I Would Die 4 U" hit number eight. Released in 1983, thealbum and the accompanying film hit the sweet spot of the MTV generation and the music video craze. Prince became not only a musical icon from this album but influenced fashion and became an international sex symbol.

The album has more widespread appeal than most of Prince's album and had the most commercial success.
