Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Reading anything by Hunter S. Thompson is always more of a trip into his psyche, than a literary journey. I think he is a brillant writer, and he language is so evocative, but it is almost always a case study of a manic depressive on a drug and alcohol binge. There is the occasional political or societal insight, but the main attraction is his descriptions of his own self destructive behavior and his inner dialogue about that.

I previously read his book on the Hells Angels which had a bit more of a journalistic feel to it, but he has a hard time keeping out his own twisted view on the subject matter. Thompson is defintiely not for everyone, but for me, if I'm in the right mood, his language still excites my admiration.
